The text Phos Hilaron ("Hail, Gladsome Light") is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of all Christian hymns. So old that even St.Basil the Great, a 4th-century theologian, thought it was old. It was also known as the "Lamplighter's Hymn" because it was sung at the end of the day by members of that guild; and it is still beloved by modern day composers, who seek to use music to dispel darkness with light. Enjoy this recording of the premiere performance! Would you like to see the score? Enjoy this perusal copy! Conductors: Would you like to to perform this piece, but with a different orchestration? Or commision a new work similar to this one? We'd love to work with you—send us a note! |
